News from Syracuse USBC WBA

Jennifer Creno continues to shine on the lanes

By Fran Piraino

Bowling at the Pastimes in the Greater Syracuse League, Creno recorded her sixth career perfect game Jan. 4. The 21-year-old right-hander moved into second place on the all-time list for most 300 games in SWBA history behind GSL teammate Sherry McClusky, who has seven.

"I stayed in the same area the whole time," Creno said. "I didn’t try to play inside. Every shot was in the pocket. The 12th shot had an awkward roll but a pin tripped the 4-pin late. I got lucky on the last shot."

Creno said her mother, hall of famer Rosa Moro, has been asking her to roll a 300. The perfect game was also a belated birthday present to Moro, who was born on Jan. 3.

"She wants one of the new 300 rings," Creno said. "She was there with me so I was excited."

McClusky, Creno and Moro are members of the first and only all-female team to compete in the GSL. The team, sponsored by Bowl Mor Lanes, bowls in the Suburban Division. Team members are McClusky, Moro, Tina Becciu, Creno and Janice McCarthy. After opening with a perfect game, Creno finished her night with a 740 series. She is averaging 222.

Mixed doubles team celebrates 51 years together

By Fran Piraino

For two local couples, bowling and friendship have gone hand in hand for the last 51 years.

Lou and Sally Peters, of Liverpool, and Donna and Jim Robertson, of East Syracuse, have been bowling together on the same mixed league team since the 1958 season. It’s a remarkable tribute to their close bond and affection for bowling.

"Believe it or not, it’s nothing we thought about until someone brought it to our attention last year," Lou Peters said.

The Peters and the Robertsons launched their life-long friendship when Jim Robertson inquired if anyone wanted to bowl in a mixed league.

"Jim and I worked together at General Electric at the time," Lou Peters remembered. "He was looking for someone to bowl in a mixed league, so I asked my wife."

"We were new to Syracuse because we moved here from Chicago," Sally Peters said. "Louie asked me if I wanted to bowl with this couple. So we met at Holiday Bowl to get to know each other and we hit it off."

The foursome sat down together for the first time at the former Erie Blvd. establishment and much to Donna and Sally’s surprise, they both had ties to the Mohawk Valley, which helped break the ice.

"It’s been a wonderful relationship," said Sally, who worked as a secretary with the Liverpool School District for 27 years.

The two couples started out in the 32-team College Mixed League at Holiday. Their team name was Purdue. That was in 1958. Since then, they have bowled in mixed leagues at seven different houses: Holiday, Lakeview Bowl, Erie Blvd. Lanes, Thunderbird, Fremont Lanes, Flamingo and now in the Dewey’s Saturday Night Mixed League at Bowling Green every other week.

For a majority of their years together, the foursome called themselves The Upsets. But last year they switched to the Golden Oldies in honor of their golden anniversary.

"It’s been a good friendship over the years," Lou Peters said. "We’ve been very close."

The Peters and the Robertsons were so tight-knit that they went on summer vacations together with their children for many years to Fourth Lake near Inlet. The Peters have three sons and the Robertsons have two daughters.

"Our families and all our kids know each other," Lou said. "They grew up together."

Besides the mixed league bowling with their wives, Jim, 75, and Lou, 79, have been on the same team in a few men’s leagues over the years. Lou, who retired from General Electric in 1989, still bowls in three leagues at Pastimes, Flamingo and the mixed league at Bowling Green.

"We’ve been competitive, but now we compete," Lou said.

Both couples continue to enjoy the game and the camaraderie they share with the other bowlers in their league.

"We used to be the youngest in the league," Lou said. "Now they are all younger than us, but we enjoy being with them."

"It’s frustrating sometimes because we don’t always get a strike, but we still enjoy it," said Sally, a former 160-average bowler. "We’ve met so many wonderful people."

"This league has been the most enjoyable," said Donna, a former 150-average bowler who still uses a 40-year-old three-finger ball.

While some bowling teams break up for one reason or another, the Golden Oldies remain committed to bowling and each other.

"We’ve been together for a long time because we’re compatible," Jim said.

"I never remember having an argument or a cross word between us," Sally said. "It’s our personalities I guess."

"We hopefully will bowl as long as we can," Lou said. "We still enjoy doing it."

The 2010 Proprietor/Manager Recognition Award will be presented to Steve Miller, Proprietor of Midway Lanes, Sunset Lanes and Seaway Lanes in Watertown. He resides within the confines of the Southern Tier USBC in the Binghamton area.

Steve is a “hands on” type proprietor and makes personal contact with league officers and individuals who are planning events at his centers. He helps leagues form, calls individuals about joining leagues and filling teams. An email goes out to all bowlers advising them of special events being offered and inviting participation. His staff makes calls reminding them of league meetings and dates and times the leagues will start their fall leagues.

Midway Lanes provides office space for the Southern Tier USBC at no cost to the association. He provided the association with a list of bowlers who were no longer bowling to encourage comeback and he provided a program to help Seniors bowl better.

There are 42 leagues bowling in his centers and only two are not certified and they are mixed leagues.

He took an interest in the merger process and helped choose candidates to be on the board. He has been an ABC and USBC Member since 1982.

Steve also established a foundation in memory of his daughter Alexis Miller to provide financial assistance to families in need. He donates the use of lanes for fundraising of Achieve (BOCES) and sponsors baseball, hockey and football teams.

Steve’s personal touch to his centers and patrons is a tribute to his success and, for his attributes, he is deserving of the Recognition Award and our congratulations.

The 2010 Service to Youth Award will be presented to Judith Phillips, Kingston and Kingston USBC WBA.

Judy has been involved in youth bowling as a coach for 28 years at the Kingston Hoe Bowl. That being said, I am sure the position involved providing education, tournaments and rides to and from bowling league and tournaments. Providing all this in itself deserves an award, but there is much more that she does in the youth bowling world.

Judy is the Chairperson of the Youth League and Tournament activities in the Kingston area.

She has served on the NYS Youth Association Board of Directors for 14 years, is the Ulster County Youth Leader Advisor and the New York State Youth Leader Advisor. Judy currently is the Chair of the State Tournament Committee.

Judy was the Director of the Ulster County Coca Cola Youth Tournament, and now is Director of the Pepis Tournament event in Region 8.

Judy is a member of the Kingston WBA Hall of Fame.

Congratulations and thank you Judy for the volunteer time you have given to a vital part of what makes bowling continue to be a popular sport, you are most deserving of this award.

New

SOMEONE WE KNOW NEEDS OUR HELP!!

SHE NEEDS THE CONTINUED SUPPORT & PRAYERS THAT WE ARE GIVING HER, BUT SHE IS SEEKING ANY INFORMATION THAT ANYONE MIGHT KNOW ABOUT TRANSPLANTS.

Dianne Boller, age 52 is a wife, mother, grandmother and NYS USBC WBA, Inc Director, Association Manager of the Glens Falls Bowling Association and former board member of the Glens Falls Women’s Bowling Association, plain and simple, but desperately, needs a liver transplant. Time is not on her side.

Her problems started in 2003 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer that lead to surgery, chemo and radiation and several complications along the way to recovery. During this whole process, Dianne saw her mother become very ill, put in a nursing home and, ultimately pass away. As time moved on, Dianne’s father had a stroke. She and her husband moved in with him so they could care for him. He lived for 10 months and ultimately passed away.

In September of 2007, Dianne went for a six month checkup, it showed abnormalities. She then went through a battery of painful tests and was diagnosed with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver which has no treatment or cure. A transplant was the only hope and because she was only cancer free for 4 years instead of 5, she was not a candidate. Her doctor then referred her to the Westchester Transplant Center. A battery of test was again taken before she could be put on a list. In April of 2008, due to her serious condition at that point in time, Dianne was put on the transplant list in hopes of finding a donor.

Since that time, due to her liver condition, post Breast Cancer and several more complications, Dianne’s condition continues to worsen. She remains on the list at Westchester. The drawbacks of becoming a donor in New York State are that you must be age 55 or under or a very healthy person up to age 60 in order to be a donor. For Dianne’s purpose a donor would need to have to Type “O” blood. Once that is determined they would have to meet other criteria and give up 60% of their liver to the recipient if they qualify. Note that the donor’s liver will grow back in 6mos. to normal size. A donor would pay nothing in medical bills should they qualify or even be tested. Family members have been tested but do not qualify to give 60% of their liver due to health conditions.

Dianne has not been able to work for over a year, her disability ran out and she has been forced to go on SS Disability. Each day is becoming a struggle.

If anyone has information that might help Dianne, please contact her IMMEDIATELY as follows;

Diane Boller
148 Bunzey Mountain Rd.
